GOP lawmaker cheers closure of University of Wyoming's DEI office: 'Artificial and biased'

LARAMIE, Wyo. (TND) — Rep. Harriet Hageman, R-Wyo., on Tuesday cheered the University of Wyoming’s (UW) decision to close its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) office in a statement to The National Desk (TND). University officials made the announcement Friday after a “working group” appointed by President Ed Seidel recommended changes to the school’s diversity approach. Seidel formed the group after the state legislature withheld $1.73 million from the school’s budget and noted it would not provide state dollars for DEI efforts.

Local church starts off Lenten season with fish fry

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Punxsutawney Memorial Library experiences staffing shortages

The Punxsutawney Memorial Library is experiencing staffing shortages and the cancellation of library programs. Library Director Jennifer Soliday says it's almost impossible to cover everything that goes on in the library even though they just hired someone to be in charge of the children's program and learn the reference desk. The community, however, is understanding the staff shortage issues. "They understand the need for this. Of course, you know they're sad that there isn't anything here after Friday or after 5 or on the weekends.

Snow begins in PA; forecast snow totals stay consistent for viewing area

The leading northern edge of the winter storm entered south-central Pennsylvania Friday afternoon. For example, snow began falling at 3 o'clock in the Johnstown area. Severe Weather Team 6 meteorologists said the forecast snow totals from Thursday did not change much in Friday's models. Winter storm warnings remained in effect for Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Bedford and Somerset Counties through Saturday. Meteorologists said towns like Johnstown and Altoona are still projected to get 6-inches of snow.

Bureau of Prisons not renewing Moshannon Valley Correctional Facility contract: Officials

PHILIPSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — The GEO Group announced Wednesday that the Federal Bureau of Prisons will not be renewing their contract for the Moshannon Valley Correctional Facility in Clearfield County. The contract, which GEO officials say generated about $42 million in annualized revenue, is set to expire March 31. The GEO Group is an equity real estate investment trust that specializes in designing and operating secure facilities processing centers and community reentry centers in the United States and across the world.

Court dismisses lawsuit filed by ex-PSU football trainer, Beta Theta Pi adviser

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A lawsuit filed by former Penn State football team trainer Tim Bream against the university has been dismissed in Centre County court. Bream claimed Penn State violated NCAA guidelines in reducing his responsibilities to avoid the appearance of scandal or impropriety. Bream was a live-in adviser at the fraternity house where a party led to the death of Timothy Piazza in 2017. Penn State says Bream never told them he was living at the fraternity.

Crews respond to fire on SCI-Smithfield grounds

HUNTINGDON - Crews are at the scene of a reported fire on state prison grounds at State Correctional Institution at Smithfield. A Department of Corrections spokesperson said a fire broke out at the power house building in between SCI Smithfield and SCI Huntingdon. The spokesperson said neither prison is in the parameter of the power house. She said that the power house is still operational and is able to supply heat and water to both prisons.

New kayak fishing class at the Quemahoning Reservoir

More than two dozen people gathered at Quemahoning Reservoir Wednesday to learn how to safely kayak fish. Kayak fishing has grown over 500 percent in popularity in the last year, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and other organizations are now working to bring the sport to our region. Avid fishers and kayakers came together to mesh the two sports in a first-of-its-kind class in the area. “A lot of it is just allowing people who have maybe fished for their entire life to experience a new type of fishing; there is always a new way to do it,"
