WASHINGTON (TND) — As Memorial Day and the busy summer travel season approach, drivers are preparing for higher gas prices. According to AAA, the national average gas price is about $3.61 per gallon. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects this average to sit around $3.70 from April through September, similar to the same period last year. This anticipated increase is due to higher demand and the Environmental Protection Agency's requirement for refineries to switch to their summer blend of fuel, which is more expensive to produce.

Philly activist who acknowledged helping flip police car during 2020 protest sentenced to 1 year in

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A well-known west Philadelphia activist who acknowledged having helped overturn a police car during 2020 protests following the death of George Floyd has been sentenced to a year in prison. Anthony Smith was sentenced Tuesday following a guilty plea in June to a federal charge of obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder, which included aiding and abetting an arson, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Smith acknowledged having helped others flip a vacant Philadelphia police car over outside City Hall on May 31, 2020.

Renaissance fair raises funds for historical buildings

BOALSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Hear ye! Hear ye! Those in Centre County got a taste of the Renaissance on Sunday. The Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum held a Renaissance fair to raise funds to continue preserving these historic Boalsburg buildings. The chapel and mansion are critical to the founding of Boalsburg, hence the community's name — and what better way to raise money for preserving history, than re-enacting history.

Windber community dresses up as ghosts to set world record

WINDBER -- If you were driving through Windber in Somerset County Saturday afternoon, you may have noticed dozens of people draped in white sheets near the side of the road. That's because more than 200 people attempted to break a Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as ghosts. The record was first by Sony Pictures in Singapore in June 2016 when 263 people were dressed as ghosts as a part of a red-carpet event for the movie Ghostbusters.

(WJAC) — A Bedford County judge is admonishing the district attorney's office for having three cases involving crimes against children end without a verdict, in the span of a few months. In two of the cases, the accused individual cannot be retried, due to "double jeopardy" rules, which means they are walking free. One of them, President Judge Travis Livengood said, has evidence of intentional misconduct by the prosecution.

4 women stole nearly $2K worth of items from Altoona Boscov's

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WJAC) — Four women from Westmoreland County have been charged after police say they stole nearly $2,000 worth of items from an Altoona Boscov's. According to the Logan Township Police Department, Courtney Jording, Terra Irwin, Melissa Irwin and Maryah Irwin entered the Boscov's on Falon Lane with empty bags Thursday. Police say the four women then put 59 items worth a combined $1,948.90 into their bags and left the store.

Coroner IDs victim of fatal Westmont house fire as 22-year-old aspiring Navy nurse

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees has identified the victim of Wednesday's fatal house fire on Fayette Street in Westmont Borough. Lees says 22-year-old Grant Jeanjaquet, a senior at Saint Vincent College, suffered "toxic thermal injuries" while attempting to escape the first floor of the home. According to West Hills Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Schrock, when crews arrived at the scene, they encountered heavy smoke and fire on the first floor of the residence and they also found three of Jeanjaquet's family members, as well as a dog, on the second floor porch roof.

Hollidaysburg man arrested for rape of 12-year-old girl

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — A Hollidaysburg man has been arrested after police say he raped a 12-year-old girl. According to a police report, 19-year-old Donovan Lynch was arrested after a child rape incident was reported to state police in Hollidaysburg. Police say the incident happened in Frankstown Township between April 25 and April 28. Lynch is being held in the Blair County Prison. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
