Pennsylvania city goes with fake tree to avoid 'Charlie Brown' fiasco
READING, Pa. - A Pennsylvania mayor has reluctantly signed off on a plan to erect a 35-foot tall artificial tree to avoid a "Charlie Brown" Christmas tree controversy like one that erupted two years ago.
The Reading Eagle reports Reading Mayor Wally Scott is a fan of natural trees but wanted to avoid the stir caused when city workers erected a scraggly real tree two years ago. The tree was first ridiculed then embraced by residents when it was likened to the scrawny tree featured in "

Simply known as “the Big Santa,” the nearly 40-foot-tall, plywood Santa along with toy soldiers and a bag of toys, has been a fixture in the Philipsburg area since the 1960's.
This past December, members of the Philipsburg Elks and other volunteers put up the display together at the Cold Stream Dam Park.
The Cow reopens after year-long hiatus
BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — "The Cow" -- which has sat off Route 56 in Pleasantville for over 60 years -- just began their very busy 2021 season.
"When we opened this year, it's been unreal," said Co-Owner Linda Claycomb.

Part of the reason: customers missed it.
Last year, COVID made them close up shop.

Elk County, PA (WJAC) — Taking care of a pet is a lifetime commitment and most pet owners know that pets are family members too.
That's why the manager of the Elk County Humane Society shelter says giving a pet as a gift is not a good idea.
Many are either set loose and become strays or they're taken to a shelter.
Officials say they want the animals they have up for adoption to go to responsible families.

Allegheny County, PA — “It’s a huge issue for the community and law enforcement” That's what F.B.I. Special Agent Mike Nordwall says about the rise in "swatting" calls towards Altoona Area, Bishop Carroll, and Bellefonte school districts. The burden of "swatting" calls is unnecessary, and it takes "away from being able to respond to real incidents, or calls for service”, he says.
Agents say responders treat the calls as if they're real, until they're confirmed not to be.
