Kastle Boxing held their first ever “Battle at the Kastle” event on Saturday.
Kastle Boxing is a non-profit USA Boxing registered team that trains everyone from amateurs to professionals.
Around 300 people came out to support and spectate some of Johnstown’s best boxers, but organizers say that this is no ordinary boxing show, as the non-profit provides an important opportunity to local youth.
“I mean these kids actually have an opportunity that many people don’t," said Brock Kull, the head boxing coach at Kastle Boxing. "To actually show what they’ve been training and learning to do for the past several years right here in front of their family and hometown crowd.”
The organization just opened their new facility last week and hope to draw more crowds so that they can continue with their purpose.
“This is a revenue producer for us so that we can keep the monthly fees low," said Kull. "Keeping the kids in their equipment and helping them still do better, so they don’t have to worry about that part. We’re in a disadvantaged part of the community. We don’t want the kids to feel like they have any disadvantage when they come into our doors.”
Those that train with Kastle Boxing highlight the multitude of ways that the sport can help the community.
“Boxing is something that brings people together more than anything," said Anthony Sikora-Warner, a boxer from the event. "It helps give people an outlet. It gives them something to work for. Even though it isn’t tangible it’s discipline, everything, it’s family.”
