The Ghost Town Trail has officially been named the 2020 trail of the year.

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced the accomplishment Monday, noting the trail’s rich history of railroading.

Formed 25 years ago, the Ghost Town Trail was originally just a 12-mile stretch before transforming into the 46-mile trail it is now, running through former coal mining towns.

Once its upcoming extension is complete, the Ghost Town Trail is close to becoming the first continuous loop of rail trail in eastern United States history.

The Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority and Indiana County Parks and Trails manage the Ghost Town Trail.
