Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities say three teen girls are facing charges after they reportedly escaped from a Pittsburgh-area facility for at-risk youth earlier this month and then were found driving a stolen work van along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Police say on Dec. 1, the teens reportedly escaped from New Outlook Academy and then stole a white, Chevrolet work van from the Brentwood area.
Troopers say the van was later spotted traveling east bound on the Turnpike, in the area of Jefferson Township, Somerset County.
Investigators say the teens were reportedly driving erratically and led police on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds over 95 mph, through a construction zone.
Police say the teens then exited the Turnpike at the Somerset Interchange and were eventually stopped in the parking lot of a gas station.
Troopers say the van has since been returned to its owner and charges are pending against the teens, who range in ages from 14 to 16.
According to its website, New Outlook Academy is a school for "at-risk adolescent females" that "provides a comprehensive and safe rehabilitative residential setting for young women ages 13-18, in grades 7-12."
